Can i make a 'playhouse' out of a shoe box for my gerbils?

Its a Avia shoe box. It has color on the outside but they would be in the inside of it. Is it a good idea or not?

Sure, its okay! I have put my hamsters in all kinds of wacky boxes and one time, I even filled up a box with loads of bedding (I got in trouble for that) and the hamsters enoyed digging down! Becareful, your bedding might be gone in seconds if you do what I did...
Reply:You can but would have to throw it out in a couple of days because cardboard is porous and it will get full of bacteria. As long as you keep changing it it's ok but they do sell little igloos and others made out of plastic, these just need a good cleaning every couple days.
Reply:Yes, they would like that rodent are very curious. You can use a lot of differet things for them to chew on. If they start chewing on the colored cardboard take it away.

Reply:You could try it, but make sure your gerbils actually don't start to actually chew the shoebox to shreds. Try and take the color off the outside because this can be harmfull to Gerbils.. If your Gerbil starts actually nipping the shoebox, and biting it, take it out immediately - you don't want your Gerbil to start_eating it.. bad idea.
Reply:They'll chew it up in no time, but that'll be great fun for them. Just be carefully that there isn't one of those sachets of sillica gel hanging around; deadly toxic.

Reply:Yeah-that's fine.The colour won't hurt them.They will eventually eat the box though and pee through it.

p.s.- do not give them plastic like the person above said. rodents chew plastic just like cardboard, but they can choke on plastic and they can't digest it. if you do buy them plastic, take it out as soon as they start chewing on it.
Reply:it is great idea. i do it all the time with my rabbits which r bigger but they have fun with the shoe boxes.
