Do I have to use a shoe box for making a pinhole camera?

Can I use a smaller box such as tissue box? The pinhole camera that I need to make does not need to take pictures. It just have to have a white paper screen at the back to view an inverted image of a candle.

The longer the distance from the pinhole to the image, the larger the image will be. If you look at the illustration here,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pin_hole_ca...

the image of top of the tree and the bottom of the tree will always touch the red lines. If the image screen is closer to the pinhole, the image will be smaller.

As far as your question about circular boxes, you put your pin hole on the side of an cylindrical box and your white screen opposite it, the screen will be curved and the image will be distorted. If you put the pinhole and the screen on the ends, there will be no difference in how the image looks.
Reply:you can use a Quaker Oats box (tubular), too.
Reply:I used an empty milk carton
Reply:I used an empty oatmeal container, it worked pretty good.
Reply:You can use anything sealed from light with a small hole in it. This kind of device is called a "camera obscura". There are BUILDINGS in California that have a small hole in the ceiling, and on a sunny day you can look at an image from outside projected onto a white surface!

Go if you can. big fun...
Reply:You can use many things to observe the sun.

NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN!

Use a piece of card to view the sun with a telescope (DO NOT LOOK THROUGH THE TELESCOPE), move it until the light shines on the card.

This is great for sun-spot viewing and good for solar eclipses.

Safety first - Looking at the sun through a telescope or binoculars will lead to PERMINANT blindness. Looking at the sun with the naked eye will lead to temporary blindness and possible perminant eye damange.

Have a look at web-site to tell you how to view the sun. Never look at the sun.
Reply:no, you can use anything that can be made light tight ie. a coffee can, match box, your own mouth
Reply:Hi You can use any kind of box as long as the light don't leak in.
Reply:No. Just a cubic box.
Reply:all u have to do is make two holes on either sides...breadthwise...and cover one of them with tracing paper...make sure u drop oil on the tracing paper properly so that it covers the whole surface of the paper...now see the image of the candle from the other open hole...u are done..
